Avoiding the 2.5% FX Fee: Best Travel Cards in Canada

Canadian banks are notorious for high foreign exchange fees. Discover the top credit and prepaid cards to save you money across the border and overseas.

The Canadian 2.5% Tax

Almost every standard credit and debit card issued by the Big Five Canadian banks (RBC, TD, Scotiabank, BMO, CIBC) charges a 2.5% Foreign Currency Conversion Fee. Whether you are cross-border shopping in the US, paying for an online subscription in USD, or backpacking in Europe, you are paying a 2.5% premium on everything. Fortunately, there are a few excellent workarounds in the Canadian market.

Prepaid & Debit Solutions

If you want to avoid credit checks or just want a simple travel card, FinTechs have come to the rescue.

1. Wealthsimple Cash: This is a prepaid Mastercard that works like a checking account. It offers 0% FX fees, plus it gives you 1% cashback on all purchases (including foreign ones). It is currently one of the absolute best products in Canada for travelers.

2. EQ Bank Card: Similar to Wealthsimple, the EQ Bank Card is a prepaid Mastercard that charges zero FX fees. Crucially, EQ Bank also reimburses out-of-network ATM fees in Canada, making it a great backup card for cash.

Credit Cards with No FX Fees

The Canadian credit card market has very few No-FX cards compared to the US, but the ones that exist are incredibly valuable.

1. Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite: This is the holy grail of Canadian travel cards. It has no FX fees, earns Scene+ points, and provides 6 complimentary airport lounge passes per year. While it has a $150 annual fee, the lounge passes and FX savings easily justify it for frequent travelers.

2. Scotiabank Gold American Express: Also offers zero FX fees and insanely high earning rates on groceries and dining (in Canada). It's a great primary card if you spend a lot in those categories.

3. Home Trust Preferred Visa: If you strictly want a credit card with absolutely no annual fee and no FX fees, this is your best option. It doesn't have flashy rewards, but it does the job.

Cross-Border Banking (US/Canada)

If you travel to the US frequently or are a Snowbird, getting a cross-border banking setup is far better than using a Canadian No-FX card.

Banks like TD, RBC, and CIBC offer "Cross-Border" accounts. You can open a true US-based checking account (FDIC insured) right from Canada. You can then transfer CAD to USD using a service like Wise (or use Norbit's Gambit) to fund the US account, and use your US debit card with zero friction.
