Wise vs Remitly vs Western Union
Sending money across borders shouldn't cost a fortune. We break down the hidden exchange rate markups, transfer speeds, and cash pickup options to find the absolute best way to send money home.
The Hidden Cost: Exchange Rate Markups
The biggest mistake people make when sending money internationally is only looking at the "transfer fee." The true cost of a transfer is hidden in the exchange rate.
Wise is one of the few companies that uses the true mid-market rate (the one you see on Google). They charge a transparent, upfront percentage fee. Remitly and Western Union offer "zero fee" transfers, but they make their money by giving you a worse exchange rate than the mid-market rate, effectively taking a 1% to 5% hidden cut. For larger transfers, Wise is almost mathematically guaranteed to be cheaper.
Cash Pickup vs. Bank Transfer
If the person receiving the money needs physical cash immediately, Wise is not an option (they only do bank-to-bank).
This is where Western Union and Remitly shine. Western Union has over 500,000 agent locations worldwide. Remitly has partnered with major banks and retail chains in developing nations (like OXXO in Mexico or Cebuana Lhuillier in the Philippines) to allow for instant cash pickup. If speed and physical cash are required, you will pay a premium, but Remitly usually offers a better rate than Western Union.
