What is Irish-Domiciled UCITS ETF?

An Exchange Traded Fund legally domiciled in Ireland that halves U.S. dividend withholding tax (30% to 15%) and shields non-U.S. residents from the 40% U.S. Estate Tax.

What is an Irish-Domiciled UCITS ETF?

An Irish-Domiciled UCITS ETF (such as VWRA, VUAA, or CSPX traded on the London Stock Exchange or Xetra) is an index fund regulated under the European Union's UCITS framework and legally domiciled in Ireland.

Two Massive Tax Advantages for Non-U.S. Investors (NRAs)

  1. 15% vs. 30% Dividend Withholding: Under the U.S.–Ireland income tax treaty, U.S. dividend withholding inside an Irish-domiciled S&P 500 ETF is automatically reduced to 15%—compared to the default 30% IRS withholding applied to Non-Resident Aliens holding U.S.-domiciled ETFs (VOO, SPY, VTI) in countries without a treaty.
  2. Exemption from the 40% U.S. Estate Tax: Non-U.S. citizens who are not domiciled in the United States face a 40% federal estate tax on U.S.-situs assets (including VOO and AAPL) exceeding just $60,000 upon death. Because Irish UCITS ETFs are foreign-situs assets, they are 100% exempt from the U.S. estate tax trap.
