What is Section 75 Protection in the UK?
Under Section 75 of the UK Consumer Credit Act 1974, if you pay for even part of a single item or service costing between £100.01 and £30,000 using a regulated UK credit card (such as a Barclaycard, NatWest, or Amex UK card), your credit card company is jointly and severally liable if the merchant goes bust, fails to deliver, or misrepresents the goods.
Key Rules UK Consumers Must Know
- Pay Even £1 on the Card: Even if you only put a £50 deposit on your credit card for a £4,000 holiday or kitchen installation and pay the rest by bank transfer, Section 75 covers the entire £4,000 contract value.
- Debit Cards & BNPL Are Excluded: Debit cards (like Chase UK or Monzo) only offer voluntary Visa/Mastercard chargeback (which is not a legal right if the airline or retailer collapses), and unregulated Buy Now, Pay Later schemes do not carry Section 75 protection.
