What is Zero-Based Budgeting (Envelope Method)?

A cash-flow allocation system where every dollar of net income is assigned a specific job before the month begins so Income minus Allocations equals $0.

What is Zero-Based Budgeting?

Popularized digitally by YNAB (You Need A Budget), zero-based budgeting is a proactive cash-management method built around a single equation: Monthly Net Income − Planned Category Allocations = $0.

How Digital Envelope Budgeting Works

Instead of looking backward at what you already spent last month, you only allocate cash currently sitting in your checking account into digital envelopes (Rent, Groceries, Roth IRA Contribution, Auto Insurance Sinking Fund). If you overspend by $60 in Dining Out, you must physically move $60 from another envelope—stopping lifestyle creep and accidental credit card debt before it happens.
